Antique Brass Drafting Tool

Made by John Davis & Son, Derby c.1890s

A circular protractor in brass, with pieced central arm. The arm bares the makers name; Davis & Son, Derby. A wonderful example of mathematical and technical equipment from (then) world leaders in the field.

Originally established in Leeds in 1799 ‘Davis Derby’, was a reknowned manufacturer of mathematical and surveying equipment. John Davis split from his uncle to work from Derby in the 1840’s. The company continues today under the name ‘Davis Derby Ltd’.

Quite an advanced piece of technical kit in its day, the beauty of the form and of the craftsmanship employed in its manufacture allows it to be enjoyed into the future.
